Our intrepid reporters have been out roaming the gigantic annual CES show in Las Vegas – here are some of the interesting new items they’ve found:
From John R. Quain, Editor-At-Large:
Bitdefender BOX – Not worried about hackers taking over your webcam or TV cable set-top box? You should be. The last hacking event took control of tens of thousands of gadgets and slowed the Internet for hundreds of thousands of users. Bitdefender wants to help prevent such attacks on smart homes and the Internet of things with a new version of its BOX, a device that blocks malware and protects privacy even for Wi-Fi devices such as smart TVs, connected light bulbs, and thermostats. Available this spring for under $100.
Sleep Number 360 Bed – There’s a welter of sleep oriented gadgets at CES, but the biggest is Sleep Number’s new 360 bed. It features SleepIQ technology that can warm your feet initially to help you fall asleep, automatically adjust the mattress when you move to your side or back in the middle of the night, and quell the snores of a spouse before they wake you up.
Smarter FridgeCam – Before you can decide what’s for dinner you need to know what’s in your fridge. The Wi-Fi connected Fridge Cam will tell you, even if you’re in the supermarket trying to remember if you need fennel or not. Just check the image on the Fridge Cam, which will include an app to remind you to pick up milk when yours is about to expire or suggest recipes based on what’s in the icebox. Coming for about $150 this spring.
Eli EV – Think of the Eli as a really cool golf cart. The electric two-seater is intended as an urban or suburban local commuter. It only goes 25 mph, but it can travel 40 or 70 miles, depending on the model, on a single charge. Its Chinese makers say they want to introduce it the U.S. first, aimed at beach communities and tight urban environs.
Visteon Head Up Display – Head-up displays (HUDs) are great for providing essential information within your line of sight as you drive. No need to be distracted by looking down at the dash. But the images in HUDs are usually small and can be difficult to see. Visteon, a major auto components supplier, intends to solve the problem with a HUD that doubles the size of visible images in full color.
Velux Motorized Windows – These shades monitor indoor and outdoor conditions, opening and closing to maximize air quality as well as save energy. They will retrofit on existing windows; $250 per window later this year.
From Linda Moskowitz, Contributing Editor:
Kyon Pet Tracker – This comes with an embedded GPS chip that helps owners to be able to monitor, track and receive information alerts about their pets. It has a both a heat and water sensor. Its single line digital display lets you post a message through an app to anyone who may find your lost dog. The collar will come in different sizes and colors.
Monument – This is a personal cloud device for photos and videos. It uses external portable USB drives for storage and will automatically sync photos and videos from your smartphone and camera over Wi-Fi when you return home. Monument’s artificial intelligence will sort your photos by face, place, time and what is in them.
Soraa – Soraa brings a healthy light environment to the home by introducing BlueFree LED smart bulbs which are tunable to a soft white brightness for an individual’s comfort. The bulbs can be set to automatically work together as a group in a room with a Onesnap control per room.
Omron – Known for its blood pressure monitors, Omron has a new arm cuff called Evolv. It works with an app so that you can keep accurate information and forward pertinent reports to your doctor. Omron also introduced a new wrist monitor called Heartvue which you can easily take with you to use on the go.
Lemon – Lemon is a fully waterproof, solar powered wireless speaker which is capable of full left-right stereo separation when using two. A full battery will give 20 hours of music and is also capable of charging your cell phone. Six hours of sunlight will give you 40 percent power.
