What Is It? – If you’d like a good-looking, well-made, high-quality smartphone, I have just two words for you: Galaxy S7. OK, that’s a word and a model designation, but the Samsung Galaxy S7 is a premium smartphone that’s been built smart. It comes two ways – the S7 and the S7 Edge, which is slightly larger and thinner with a screen that curves at the edges and can display some limited information there. Other than that, and a slightly larger battery on the Edge, the two are virtually identical. They share the same processor and come with 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, and a slot for a MicroSD card for added storage. The phones have a 12 MP back camera and a 5 MP front facing camera for selfies. A few years ago, a study found 1 in 5 users managed to drop their phones in a toilet – so it’s a good thing that Samsung says the S7 is water resistant. That means it will be OK for up to 30 minutes in 5 feet or less of water – but I wasn’t about to test it in my toilet! The phones come with a fast charger – zero to full charge in less than 2 hours – and can be charged wirelessly if you have an induction charging device. The battery life is very good too, so you won’t need to plug in the charger too often. The S7 has a 5.1 inch HD Super AMOLED screen, and the S7 Edge screen measures 5.5 inches. Each has a hefty feel in your hand, though the Edge might feel a little too large for some.
Is It 50+ Friendly? – The Galaxy S7 has a nice, bright display and well-placed controls. Samsung has something called “Easy mode” – you’ll find it under “Settings” – that allows users to create simpler Home screens with just the most needed standard apps – you get to choose – and a larger font size is used on the whole device.
What’s The Frustration Factor? – Samsung built the S7 very sleek – maybe a little too sleek – as the back of the phone is very slick and the S7 might slide out of your hand if you don’t hold it tightly enough. It also shows smudges, if you look closely.
Is It Worth The Money? – The Samsung Galaxy S7 series is definitely the phone to own, better than just about any other Android model and competitive with the latest iPhones. These are premium models, so expect to pay the price: over $600 for the regular S7, over $700 for the S7 Edge if bought unlocked at Amazon.com. The wireless carriers will also either sell you one outright or make you a rent-to-own deal.
