chromecast2-1What Is It? – Back in 2013, Google came out with the first Chromecast, a small stick device to be plugged into a TV, which allowed you to “cast” video content from smartphones, tablets, Chromebooks, PCs, and Macs to the larger TV screen.  At $35, it was an inexpensive way to add streaming content to televisions that offered few or no Internet channels.  This is an improved version, at the same price, offering better connections and some minor changes.  It also comes round and in colors.  Just like the first version, you plug the Chromecast 2 into your TV’s HDMI port and the included power supply.  It immediately asks you to browse on your smartphone or other device to the setup site, through which you connect the Chromecast to your local Wi-Fi.  In my case, I first had to update Google Play, then the Chromecast itself, before I could start using it.  Then when you open a Chromecast compatible app – it will have a little icon in the upper right – you can “cast” the video stream onto the TV screen and control it from your phone or tablet.  There’s a wide variety of compatible apps – YouTube and Google Play of course, plus a large selection of free and subscription services such as Netflix and Hulu.  You can also see your Google-stored photos and stream audio.

chromecast2-2Is It 50+ Friendly? – The Chromecast leads you through the setup process, then offers a tutorial video, if you need it.

Frustration Factor? – If you’re familiar with your smartphone or tablet, you should have no problems.

Is It Worth It? – It’s only $35 and the shipping is free.  So if you have a “dumb” TV or one without all the streaming services you’d like to use, it is very much worth it.  If you already have the first Chromecast and are happy with it, this is not a major upgrade.  Oh, and if you want to watch Amazon Instant videos, there are extra steps you must take, because Amazon wants you to use their streaming device, not Chromecast.
