Is 8 terabytes good for you? Because if you have that much stuff to backup or store from your various computers and devices, you can now buy the Seagate Backup Plus Hub which comes with as much as 8 TB of drive space, by far the largest consumer backup drive currently available. You can also get the same product with smaller capacities, if you don’t need all that space and want to save a few dollars.
The “Plus” of the Backup Plus is that it comes with two USB3 ports in front which you can use to not only backup your smartphones or other devices, but also recharge them. The USB3 plug in the back is what you connect to a computer to do high speed data transfers of videos, photos, music and other data. It will also work as a USB2 connector.
Why, you might ask, does anyone need a backup drive with 8 TB of capacity? Well, some of you have multiple devices among your family members who may each have their own computers or phones that could use regular backups. Yes, 8 TB is lot, but we’re not talking thousands of dollars here, so why not have plenty of room.
With all that storage space, you can make image backups of your computer(s), which copy everything into huge files, so in case of a drive break down, or ransomware attack, you have a complete copy of everything in addition to those most important files that you should be backing up to the cloud at least once a day.
I use Macrium Reflect Free to image the drives on my Windows computer on a regular basis, and having 8 TB of space means I would not have to be deleting images every other time to make room for more. The Macrium product is free for non-commercial home use (be sure you make boot media with it), and they have paid versions with more features for both home and business users.
The Seagate Backup Plus installs by just plugging it into power and your computer’s USB3 drive. It was ready to go in seconds on my Windows 7 desktop, and comes already formatted as an 8 TB NTFS drive – good for Windows users right out of the box – and for Mac users Seagate includes an NTFS driver so you can use it on both types of machines interchangeably.
Seagate also includes its Dashboard software to handle backups of computers, smartphones and even social media data. If 8 TB is not enough, there’s also 200 GB of storage on Microsoft OneDrive, free for the first 2 years, which is also the warranty time on the Backup Plus.
All this for less than $230 at Amazon.com or direct from Seagate, slightly less for the 4 or 6 TB versions. Here’s their short video:
